The Haves and the Have Nots is an American crime drama and soap opera created, executive produced, written, and directed by Tyler Perry. The premise of the series is based on Perry's 2011 play The Haves and the Have Nots. The series premiered on May 28, 2013 on the Oprah Winfrey Network. It is the first scripted television series to air on the network. Both the show's first and second episodes aired back-to-back on its premiere night. Each episode is one hour long.
"The Haves And The Have Nots" -- based on Perry's stage play of the same name -- is a little bit like "Dynasty" and "Dallas" (the updated version), focusing on three families (two wealthy, one poor) in Savannah, Georgia. If anything, it's more telenovela than over-the-top drama and isn't exactly like the goings-on in Genoa City, Salem or Port Charles, but that doesn't make it any less soapy. Or satisfying...The actors are great and deliver their lines with aplomb -- and thankfully they don't give that cheesy last look before the scene cuts to a commercial. [The show] clearly has an audience, but that doesn't mean Perry and co. should be phoning it in. The components are there; they just need to work with it.--Denette Wilford, Huffington Post, April 8, 2014
