The Bachelorette is an American reality television dating game show that debuted on ABC on January 8, 2003. The show is a spin-off of The Bachelor that airs on the same network. The first season featured Trista Rehn, the runner-up date from the first season of The Bachelor, offering the opportunity for Rehn to choose a husband among 25 bachelors. The 2004 season of The Bachelorette again took a runner-up from the previous season of The Bachelor. After last airing on February 28, 2005, the series returned to ABC during the spring of 2008, following an absence of three years.
Like some wacky social experiment, ABC's ''Bachelorette'' reverses the premise of the first two ''Bachelor'' series, in which a single man chose a potential wife from 25 women, inspiring deluded dreams from the contestants and monster ratings from viewers. Socially, that reversal is a profoundly stupid idea. There's too much sexual stereotyping around, too much of a lingering sense that what makes a man a playboy makes a woman a slut. And ''The Bachelorette'' is hardly trying to explode those clichés...[F]or men rejection is about ego, for women it's about emotion. What will be the reaction of those brokenhearted -- I mean empty-handed, ego-shattered -- rejects?--Caryn James, The New York Times, January 8, 2003
