Poldark is a British historical period drama television series based on the novels of the same title by Winston Graham and starring Aidan Turner in the lead role. The series was written and adapted by Debbie Horsfield for the BBC, and directed by several directors throughout its run. Set in the late 18th century, the plot follows the titular character on his return to Cornwall after the American War of Independence.
“Poldark” is reasonably good stuff, milking the emotions and pleasing the eye without unduly insulting the intelligence...Packing two historical novels into eight episodes means that things move quickly, and in the first few weeks alone you can expect a full catalog of perils and palpitations...The virtue of “Poldark,”...is that it never gives you time to stop and think, and it avoids predictability through its abundance of plot. Nothing stands out (including the blandly pretty cinematography and insistent music), but it’s saucier than the sum of its parts.--Mike Hale, The New York Times, June 19, 2015
