The first series, set in 1957, premiered in the UK on 15 January 2012.
The popular show, based on the memoirs of East End midwife Jennifer Worth, has never shied away from harsh truths and unhappy endings.
It’s true that children could play out in the streets and that housewives left their front doors open in London’s Docklands in the Fifties, but there was also disease and poverty – and "Call The Midwife" has always depicted it. The joy and the cleverness of "Call The Midwife" is its ability to mix heart-wrenching drama with gentle comedy, and not allow the combination to feel strained. Much of that is due to the sympathetic cast, who never over-egg it.--Christopher Stevens, Daily Mail, January 18, 2016
