Under apartheid in South Africa, Col. Kruger (Nigel Hawthorne) is a merciless interrogator who symbolizes an era's cruelty. Among his victims is professor Marty Strydom (Eric Stoltz), who is jailed for engaging in rebellious activities. Recognizing a willful spirit, Kruger works hard to break his subject. But when, 10 years later, the tables have turned and Kruger is put to question by the new government, he must face an ex-prisoner-turned-questioner (Louis Gossett Jr.).
Starring Jodie Foster and John Lithgow, 'Mesmerized' is a film with is based on the true case that took place in New Zealand. 18 year old Victoria (Foster) is an orphan who has been raised in an orphanage and isn't certain what her future holds, however, she is approached by an older man of some wealth and affluence who offers her a proposal of marriage. Victoria, unsure of her future but knowing that she must soon leave the orphanage, heeds that advice of the nuns who run the orphanage and agrees to marry Oliver Thompson (Lithgow). Although Victoria is uncertain of exactly what she should expect as a wife she is totally unprepared for her husbands tendency towards cruelty and lascivious nature.
The local minister, Dr. Finch, soon enters the Thompson's lives and introduces Victoria to the subject of hypnosis. Victoria becomes fascinated with the subject and attempts to share her enthusiasm with Oliver, who dismisses the topic as rubbish. Dr. Finch, however, soon changes his mind as he demontrates the power that hypnosis has by hypnotizing Victoira. Oliver quickly understands that, while Victoria is under hypnosis, she is susceptible to his nature and he is able to have his way with her.
Oliver's plans for future attempts of his wife's conquest aren't realized as he soon becomes gravely ill. No one is certain as to what is causing his illness and watches as he is soon reduced to a shell of his former self as his health deteriorates rather quickly. Finally, Oliver dies; however, his father believes that there has been foul play and launches accusations against Victoria that she has murdered his son. The climax comes in the courtroom as charges are made against Victoria that she forced poison down Oliver's throat, however, there is no proof that he was forced to injest the poison. Victoria is soon acquitted of the charges and leaves for the States.
After a series of buildings catch fire, the residents of a small country town are quick to accuse Italian lumberjack Manou (Ettore Manni), who's already guilty of seducing most of the town's women. No one suspects the real culprit, seemingly frigid schoolmarm Mademoiselle (Jeanne Moreau), who, beneath her quiet exterior, hides a torrential sadism. She continues to commit countless random and anonymous crimes, all in a misguided attempt to draw Manou's attention to herself.
